Creating A Healthier Brain

Hello friends!

Today I want to talk about something that you likely have never given much thought to before…brain health. I can almost read your brain now as you read this, “Justice, what does that even mean?” Well, I’m glad you asked! I hope to share just a little information about what that means and why it is so crucial to your overall wellness and happiness.

I recently listened to one of the best podcasts called, “How You Can Be Happier: Practical Tips & Advice” by Sadie Robertson. She speaks with leading psychiatrist Dr.Daniel Amen about this exact topic. He explains that happiness is a moral obligation. 

Our society is constantly saying, “more is better.” If we have a nicer car or more money, that will make us happier. Right? This is such a lie. I fall into this trap almost daily. Scrolling through Instagram, the devil is feeding my brain lies, “if you had a flatter stomach, a designer purse, or more money, you might be happier.” More stuff will not make you happier my friends. Why is this so hard for all of us to realize? 

According to Dr. Daniel Amen, drug and alcohol abuse are one of the leading causes of an “unhealthy brain.” As we all have come to realize substance abuse also leads to depression and anxiety. The brain is very much like our bodies, it’s what we fill and fuel it with that makes all the difference. 

Dr. Daniel Amen gave a statistic that blew my brain…no pun intended. He stated that happiness is 40% genetic, 10% situational, and 50% our control and habits. Let that sink in for just a moment. We can become happier, whether we know it or not. It all boils down to our daily routines and habits. We have more control than we often realize. As I think about the concept of happiness, there’s no denying that every human is searching for it. We are wired and designed to long for happiness in our lives. When we are not living with a purpose or to our full potential these alone can be detrimental to our brain health. Your purpose and goals, like showing God’s love to others or putting more effort into school or career are vital to living a purpose-filled life. The healthier and more positive our purpose is, often leads to a healthier brain and overall good health. 

If you feel your past defines the person you are today, my encouragement is that you have the power to change that narrative. Brain health needs to become a priority to experience the life we desire to live. This might sound silly, but write down 2-3 areas in your life that you know could use some improvement. For me, I want to be more present in my conversations with people. I find that sometimes my mind is elsewhere during conversations with people that I love. Yours might be working out more, finding more time to spend with your family, unplugging for stress triggers, or even finding a therapist. Whatever yours might be, it’s time to start creating more purpose in your life. 

I want to pause here for a quick second…I am fully aware that not everyone is in a great place emotionally and we can’t always flip a switch and we are all better or in a better place for that matter. Life can be very challenging and we are not always meant to navigate our quest for happiness alone. I want to encourage you to never feel ashamed for seeking professional help or talking with a friend. This is way too important to continue brushing your happiness under the rug. I don’t know a single soul who isn’t interested in becoming better or becoming happier, who is with me?

Our Daily Notifications

 

Hello friends!

Have you ever received those notifications on your phone, reporting your daily screen time? If you’re like me, you are completely astonished by that amount of time. It’s quite obvious that our phones are used for so many different functions that we dearly depend on. Let’s face it, most of us couldn’t get across town without using our phone GPS, or would we dare try a new restaurant without first checking its reviews from our phones? Heck, we even pay for most things from our phones. I could go on and on with all the various ways we lean on our phones to get us through the day.

I am fully aware that cell phones are here to stay…at least for the foreseeable future. Don’t worry I’m not going to challenge all of you to fast from your phone for lent season. Rather, I hope you will join me in becoming more aware of our aimless time spent on social media and how it’s become almost an obsession for many of us. I know our society’s obsession with screen time, particularly social media, is not a new topic to many of you. For those of you who know me, know that I happen to LOVE social media and use it socially, as well as, professionally for various jobs and internships. I believe social media is also here to stay!

As I began this blog topic regarding phone and social media usage, I was prompted to look at my own screen time. That day my usage was 6 hours! WOW! I won’t lie, I was a bit embarrassed and ashamed by that. Not to mention I spend almost 3 hours every day posting on social media for this blog project, looking at statistics, etc…

Since starting this blog, my screen time has increased exponentially. However, I find myself at times becoming overly focused on gaining more followers, likes, or comments. Side note, in a way I am required to because I get graded on every click I receive. (Not sure this is a healthy way to be graded) But don’t we all fall into this trap from time to time? We often wonder why we didn’t get a certain amount of likes or we even have an app to know all the people who unfollow us. Why do these things matter? They don’t. Society is lying to us. I’ve come to realize this misguided focus or aka…obsession is robbing me of time spent in real and meaningful connections with people. I never step away from using social media thinking, “Wow, that filled me up” or “I can’t wait to connect with that person again.” Or better yet, “that was such a meaningful interaction.” 

There’s no doubt that our cell phones have almost become a physical part of our being. We wouldn’t dare leave home without it! Have you ever gotten your phone stolen? Has your phone completely broken down? Well, long story short my phone was stolen at the good ole Broadway here in Nashville, Tennessee. I spent the whole next day pissed at this Verizon guy named Kyle, that was being a total a** by the way. He wasn’t showing the proper amount of empathy for my devastating situation. Nevertheless, it felt like my world had ended. It was as though I was completely lost and couldn’t function without it. There might have even been a few tears shed in the Verizon store that day.  I’ll blame that on Kyle:). How sad and pathetic is that? What type of person are you when things get uncomfortable? What happens when things don’t go your way? We often feel paralyzed!  

There’s no denying that social media plays a significant role in our society’s burning desire to ‘fit in’ or obtain material things. Who has the newest Bronco or cutest pair of Lululemon leggings? I am not implying that material ‘things’ aren’t nice to possess, because boy oh boy do I love shopping and shiny new things. However, I do get caught up in this behavior more than I wish to admit. I have to be so intentional as to not let this spiral out of control. I know I’m not alone. My point in all of this is that we depend way too much on our phones and social media at times. Don’t get me wrong, social media and technology are magnificent things. We can Facetime someone across the world. Most jobs revolve around technology. My encouragement is that we need to reevaluate our focus and draw a line. 

When I reflect on just this past year, I am reminded of what has brought me the most joy. It’s not my connections on social media but rather the long walks with my sister and other deep and meaningful conversations with friends. Nothing can beat those belly laughs with friends. Those are the moments that I want to be intentional about creating. My encouragement to you is to remember to make those moments every day. Whether it is cooking dinner with your boyfriend, checking in on a neighbor, or going out of your way to connect with a professor.  Those are the moments where we are impacted, as well as, impacting others the most. 

Let’s ask ourselves, what if we were to receive a phone notification sharing our daily usage for authentic-time spent with others one on one? That my friends would be a shift for all of us!

Pizza Roll-Ups

 

For all you pizza lovers, this recipe is for you! This little easy snack recipe is great for people on the go, and who don’t have time to make an extravagant meal. They are always a favorite for movie nights at home as well. I wanted to thank you for the amazing feedback from my salmon recipe, but a few of you commented it was a bit “too boujee” or you weren’t a salmon fan. So this recipe might appeal more to those with a non-boujee palate. Kidding, but this recipe takes a total of 12-15 minutes and they are so delicious and they have a perfect crunch. I have included a short video to better explain the process down below.

*For you non-meat eaters, no worries! This dish allows you to make it your own by adding your favorite toppings. Such as cooked peppers, mushrooms, or onions.

Ingredients 

2 large or medium-sized low sodium tortillas

4 tablespoons marinara sauce

⅛ cup of cheddar cheese (any cheese works)

7 pieces of pepperoni 

Dash of Olive oil or spray-on butter

Garlic salt to finish off

(this recipe will create 4 pizza roll-ups)

 

Directions

  1. Preheat air fryer or oven to 400 degrees
  2. Cut the tortilla into four vertical strips. Place 1 tablespoon of marinara at the bottom of the vertical piece of the tortilla. 
  3. Add cheese on the top of the marinara.
  4. Slice pepperoni in half. Place three pieces of pepperoni on the top of the vertical tortilla pieces.
  5. Take the two pieces on the end of the tortilla (round pieces) and place them in the middle of the vertical piece. It should look similar to a cross.
  6. Take the bottom of the vertical piece, roll it up towards the middle. (marinara + cheese) Then roll the top piece down towards the middle. (pepperoni) Then fold both sides into the middle. This will now create a small pizza square. (see video for better explanation)
  7. Place a toothpick through the middle of the pizza roll-up, keeping everything together.
  8. Add a light spray of spray-on butter/olive oil and add garlic salt to the top of the pizza roll-up.
  9. Place pizza roll-ups into the oven/air fryer for 5 minutes at 400 degrees. 
  10. After five minutes, flip them over. Continue baking for an additional 5 minutes.
  11. Allow cooling for a few minutes. To dress them up, feel free to side with marinara.

If you want to “boujee” up the pizza roll-ups, feel free to substitute the marinara for pesto. (or use both) When they come out of the oven, sprinkle oregano or basil on top. Bon appetite!

My Fitness Journey

Hello lovely friends!!

Today I am going to share my fitness journey with you. I honestly don’t know anyone that doesn’t have even the slightest desire to improve their overall wellness. Two obvious areas that we are going to dive into today are, yes, our diet and exercise routine. No, I am not suggesting we all go on diets or train for a triathlon. Rather, I want us to talk about what foods we are fueling our bodies with and our fitness routine. Allow me to share my journey in these two areas. 

I felt led to share this picture of me during my freshman year of high school to just give you a reference of what I used to look like before my fitness journey. Yes, I recognize that I was not extremely overweight and I had some baby fat to shed. It makes me giggle, knowing my sister thought this was a great picture of me. After seeing this picture of myself, I didn’t focus on my weight but rather committed to getting fit. 

My first order of business was to look at my diet. When I refer to ‘diet’, I know the first thing you think of is crazy strict or the latest fad diet being shared in the media. No, whether you realize it or not, we are all on a diet every day. Your diet is what you are filling your body with or more importantly, fueling your body with. No joke, my sister and I still talk about how every day when we would come home from school we would down some hotdogs and ramen. I would pop a hot dog in the microwave every day. I’m sure my dad was just happy that we were supporting the pork industry. So, when you think of how you are fueling your body, does that make some of you cringe? This conversation isn’t to make you feel guilty but rather just be more aware and intentional of what you are eating. What would happen if you started asking yourself, ‘what am I going to ‘fuel’ my body with today?’ Rather than, ‘what am I going to ‘fill’ my body with?’ This would be huge! It was for me at least. I shared earlier that I have stomach and digestive issues. I was tired of feeling miserable and came to the realization that most of my issues stemmed from what I was filling my body with. Something had to change! I want to share a couple of things I started doing that made the biggest impact on my overall nutrition. I started listening to my body. I realized when I would eat fast food I would have to run to the bathroom about a million times a day. I knew I had to cut way down on my fast food consumption and gluten. 

As I have shared my love for cooking, this meant I had to consider all the things I was personally cooking and baking for myself. I started making small changes and incorporated healthier options. It’s all about baby steps. For example, I stopped using butter in most recipes and instead used olive oil. I substituted leaner proteins in place of fattier meats. I tried to cut down an enormous amount of carbs. Boy, oh boy, do I love me some carbs. Many dietitians have mentioned, “it’s 80% diet and 20% exercise.”

So, friends, I want to encourage you to make a shortlist or even choose only one healthy thing you will add to your diet or an unhealthy thing you will eliminate from your diet for one whole week. For me, I have an insane sweet tooth. I am going to try and limit my sugar intake!

Moving along to working out…something that I have realized many people struggle with is knowing what to do when they are at the gym. I used to prance around the gym accomplishing very little because I didn’t know where to start. I felt intimidated and didn’t have enough sense to ask for help. Can any of you relate? This is just silly! I want to encourage you to start researching and reaching out to the gym staff that is available to you. If you don’t feel comfortable asking, then start watching YouTube videos and educate yourself.

It wasn’t until my freshman year in college that I made working out a priority in my life. I started seeing a drastic change in my body when I would keep my heart rate at a certain level for a certain amount of time. My goal for every workout was to push myself so hard I felt drops of sweat running down my face. I know this might seem silly, but I am serious. I also think that sweating is so healthy for your body. Sweating is a detox for your body, and it also releases bad toxins. It’s time to start sweating, my friends. 

One of the biggest struggles I have felt along my fitness journey is not seeing changes. I know many of you can relate. Friends, we aren’t going to get abs overnight. Gosh, I wish. It all boils down to being patient with yourself but also being consistent in your workout routines. During the pandemic, as you all know, all the gyms were temporarily closed. At first, this derailed my workout routine. Obviously, no one knew how long this would last, so I was determined to do some physical activity even through the pandemic. I would grab my yoga mat, and google “10-minute HITT workout” or “5-minute ab workout.” Anything to move my body. Maybe this is where some of you can begin. Start small. Grab your yoga mat or a blanket and move your body. Or better yet, make a walking date with a friend. Put that date on your calendar each week.

It’s time to start making a difference in your lifestyle. Challenge yourself to take one food item out of your diet. Challenge yourself to do 50 squats a day. For the next two weeks leading up to spring break, this is exactly what I am going to do. 50 squats a day, and taking one item out of my diet. Let’s do it friends, who is with me?
